I was wandering through a forest I didn’t recognize. The trees were enormous, ancient things with bark that felt alive, twisting in ways that seemed unnatural, their branches forming a dark, suffocating canopy above. Every now and then, a sliver of moonlight pierced through the foliage, casting long shadows that shifted with each step. I couldn’t hear anything except the crunch of leaves underfoot and my own breath, ragged in the silence.

“Hello?” My voice seemed strangely muffled, almost muted.

There was no answer.

Despite the silence, I couldn’t shake the sense that I was being watched, though no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t spot anyone.

“Who’s out there?” I shouted, drawing my sword. “I’m armed!”

But I wasn’t. With a jolt, I realized that my sword was missing. As soon as it was in my hands, it vanished. Fear shot through me, cold and sharp. Despite the strange, creeping unease, I couldn’t stop moving forward. The path was winding, tangled with roots that seemed to reach out, snagging my boots every few feet.

Something—no, someone—was calling me.

I didn’t know how I knew, but I did. The pull was strong, magnetic, tugging at my chest and urging me deeper into the unknown. My heart raced, though not entirely out of fear. There was something else… Anticipation, maybe? I couldn’t tell. The trees thickened, their trunks so close together that I had to squeeze through at certain points.

Then, without warning, the trees parted. I stepped out into a clearing bathed in silver light, the moon hanging impossibly large in the sky, casting a glow over everything. It was… breathtaking.

A waterfall cascaded down from the far side of the clearing, its water shimmering like liquid glass as it fell into a crystal-clear pool below. Wildflowers dotted the landscape—bright, vibrant blooms in every color I could imagine. Reds, purples, blues, yellows.

It was nothing like home.

A sense of peace washed over me.

And then I saw her.

She stood at the edge of the pool, her long, silver hair flowing down her back like water itself, blending almost seamlessly into the mist from the falls. She was tall, ethereal, dressed in flowing robes that looked to be woven from moonlight. Her eyes—strikingly gray, like polished river rock—were watching me with an intensity that made me stop in my tracks.

I felt my breath catch in my throat. There was something ancient about her, like she had seen centuries pass in the blink of an eye, and yet there was warmth in her gaze. Like she knew me. Like she’d always known me.

“Thane Stone—how fitting a false name,” she said, her voice soft but clear, like a song carried on the wind.

I blinked. How did she know my name? I hadn’t said anything. I hadn’t—

“You have walked a long path to get here,” she continued, stepping toward me, her bare feet not making a sound on the grass, “but your journey is only just beginning.”

My throat felt dry. “Who are you?”

She smiled, though there was something sad about it. “A guide. A friend, perhaps, if you’ll let me.
